So much debate raged on this year as to who the best team in the country was with both Paarl Gim and Affies going unbeaten this year. Here at SSN, we went with Gim as the number one team on our Top 20, in spite of a draw with Oakdale, much to the dismay of those in favour of Affies. The first XVs will no doubt be different come 2014, however many a schoolboy rugby fan will be salivating at the prospect of these two great rugby schools going head-to-head in a match that is expected to be televised.

Once more, 20 top schoolboy rugby teams will take part in this prestigious 2-day Wildeklawer festival which attracts the cream of the crop. Due to Easter’s late arrival next year (17 – 21 April), several schools such as Paarl Gim and Outeniqua will not be in action at the Easter Festivals. The Wildeklawer Festival is seen by many as the toughest and most competitive of all the festivals and is more or less competed between the best school first XVs from around the country.

Grey Bloem will get the chance to avenge their defeat to Outeniqua at the Kearsney Festival this year in another cracker match on Day one. Day two’s big clashes will pit Grey PE against Waterkloof and Paul Roos against Selborne. The Paul Roos v Selborne clash will be of particular interest as both schools had powerful Under-16 teams in 2013.

Missing out this year are Paarl Boys High, Framesby, Sharks Invitational XV, Wildeklawer XV. Boishaai are representing South Africa at the 2014 Sanix Youth World Invitational where they will meet fierce opposition like New Zealand’s National Schools First XV champions Hamilton Boys’ High School.

This allows for King Edward VII School (KES) and Selborne to make their debuts at the event whilst the Rooies from HTS Middelburg return to the festival having last attended it in 2012.

The 2014 Wildeklawer Super Schools rugby festival runs from 28 – 30 April and will take place at Diamantveld High School in Kimberley.

  1. Totally disappointed that Glenwood game isn’t being televised even though it was advertised that it would be shown on supersport
